A 1970s colour photo of a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Douglas DC-9-32, registration PH-DNC, parked on the apron at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in 1970. The aircraft is finished in the classic KLM livery of the period, featuring the striped blue tail fin with the white crown logo and “KLM Royal Dutch Airlines” titles along the fuselage. Ground crew members are visible near a small blue and yellow service vehicle by the open forward passenger door. In the background, the modern glass-fronted terminal buildings and a passenger boarding bridge at gate B22 are visible, with spectators lining the rooftop observation deck.
Today, Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) has expanded into one of Europe’s largest and most technologically advanced aviation hubs. While the general architectural style of the piers seen here remains part of the airport’s heritage, the facilities have been completely modernised with digital systems and automated boarding gates. The Douglas DC-9 was a mainstay of KLM’s short-to-medium haul European network for decades before being retired in the late 1980s. The specific aircraft in this photo, PH-DNC, was named ‘City of Utrecht’ and served the airline faithfully throughout the latter half of the 20th century.
