A 1960s colour photo of a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Convair CV-340-48, registration PH-CGD and named ‘Pieter Brueghel’, on the apron at Hannover Airport in 1963. The aircraft is finished in the classic KLM livery of the era, featuring a white fuselage with a dark blue cheatline and the striped ‘crown’ logo on the tail fin. Ground crew are seen servicing the plane, with a mobile staircase positioned at the rear door and a BP fuel tanker parked nearby. A small yellow and white service vehicle with baggage trailers is also stationed alongside the aircraft, capturing the typical turnaround operations for a regional European flight in the early 60s.
Today, Hannover Airport (HAJ) has grown into a major international gateway with modern terminals and advanced ground handling facilities that have long since replaced the open-apron servicing seen here. The Convair 340 was a reliable workhorse for KLM’s short-haul routes before being phased out in favour of turboprop and jet aircraft like the Fokker F27 and Douglas DC-9. The specific aircraft pictured, ‘Pieter Brueghel’, was eventually sold and operated by various carriers in the United States and Latin America.
