Looking east along King’s Road, Chelsea, in 1971, from outside No. 160, with a run of fashionable shopfronts and awnings catching the afternoon sun. Closest to the camera is Oscar’s beneath its brown canopy, followed by The Crate, while above and beyond can be seen signs for Clobber and Sandro’s Cellar. The pavement is full of long-haired shoppers and couples in coats, scarves and boots, giving the scene exactly the kind of relaxed but style-conscious atmosphere that made King’s Road such a byword for youth fashion in the early 1970s. Parked cars and a black cab line the road to the right, while the red roundel of a bus stop farther along the street anchors this as an everyday Chelsea street scene rather than a posed fashion shot.
