A Jones baler machine loaded onto a British Rail lowfit wagon in 1961, photographed in a freight yard with rows of sidings and terraced houses beyond. The wagon is clearly marked “LOWFIT” and “NOT TO BE LOADED WITH CONTAINERS”, while the blue agricultural machine above carries prominent Jones Balers branding and the model name “Star Hay Baler”. It is a particularly good example of the sort of specialist machinery traffic that once moved by rail on flat and lowfit wagons, with chains and wheel chocks used to secure the load in place. The contrast between the bright blue baler and the weathered red-brown wagon makes this an especially striking industrial freight scene from the last years when such individual wagonload consignments were still common.
