A 1970s color photo of the exterior of John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York during 1971. The image captures a wide view of the airport’s roadway and parking areas, filled with classic American cars of the era, including several large sedans and station wagons. In the background, the original multi-story control tower with its distinctive radar dome stands prominently against the overcast sky. To the left, the sleek, glass-fronted terminal buildings are visible, reflecting the modern jet-age architecture of the period. Yellow traffic lights and “No Stopping or Standing” signs line the foreground, illustrating the functional roadside infrastructure of the airport in the early 1970s.
Today, JFK Airport has undergone massive transformations, with many of its original mid-century structures replaced by state-of-the-art terminal complexes like the new Terminal 4 and the JetBlue T5. The iconic original control tower seen here was decommissioned and replaced by a much taller, more advanced tower in the 1990s to manage the vast increase in transatlantic air traffic. While the general layout of the “Terminal City” central area remains, the vintage American automobiles and 1970s-era signage have long since been replaced by modern transport systems and digital wayfinding.
