Jeep XJ-001 at the New York Auto Show 1970

This authentic 1970s color photograph, captured in 1970, features the Jeep XJ-001 concept car on display at the New York Auto Show. The archival image highlights the experimental 4×4, finished in a high-visibility yellow with bold black racing stripes and matching black rocker panels. Built on a Jeep CJ-5 chassis, the XJ-001 was a futuristic exploration of a high-performance off-road sports car, featuring a hood scoop, wide chrome wheels, and an open-door roadster design. Positioned at the New York Coliseum, the exhibit is framed by large red Jeep pylons and a circular overhead display featuring the “2-Car Car” marketing slogan. Sadly, the original XJ-001 prototype was destroyed in a transport truck fire later that year, making this image a rare factual record of the vehicle in its original show condition. While the New York Coliseum has since been demolished and replaced by the Time Warner Center, this photo preserves a pivotal moment when Kaiser Jeep (just as it was being acquired by AMC) pushed the boundaries of utility vehicle design.
