The Japan Pavilion occupied a sizeable footprint at the fair, spread across three separate buildings and designed to highlight the contrast — and balance — between Japan’s ancient traditions and its rapidly advancing modern identity. Just steps away, fairgoers encountered a quieter and older Japan — one defined by craftsmanship, art, gardens, and centuries-old cultural expression. Displays included traditional decorative arts, textiles, ceramics, and other objects that reflected the delicate, refined aesthetic long associated with Japanese heritage.
The pavilion became a favorite among visitors for the way it demonstrated progress without losing identity. At a fair themed around the future, Japan offered a lesson in how a nation could modernize — not by replacing its past, but by building upon it.
