The Indonesia Pavilion introduced visitors to the culture, heritage and developing identity of one of the world’s largest and most diverse island nations. Inside, exhibits highlighted Indonesia’s long history, its natural resources, and the social and economic programs shaping the country in the years following independence.
A combined theater and restaurant offered an immersive experience. Fairgoers could watch cultural presentations or films and then sample traditional Indonesian cuisine — something very few Americans at the time had ever encountered. The pavilion aimed to convey both ancient tradition and a modern nation emerging on the world stage.
Though smaller than some of the major corporate structures, the Indonesia Pavilion added to the fair’s international character and gave visitors the opportunity to experience a culture far removed from everyday American life.
