In My Lady’s Chamber on Bridge Street, Pinner, in 1974, a small Tudor-style shopfront set between two passageways and photographed on a bright spring day. The gold-lettered fascia, leaded upper gable and dark display window give the little building a distinctly old-world character, while passers-by in flared trousers and long coats root the scene firmly in the mid-1970s. In the window are posters for a local production of The Sorcerer by the Pinner & Hatch End Operatic Society at Blackwell School, adding a nice piece of everyday community detail, while the nose of a red Leyland bus can be seen at the right-hand edge. It is a charming suburban shopping-street view, mixing period fashion, local theatre advertising and the faux-historic style that once gave places like Pinner part of their appeal.
