An InterCity HST power car at Liverpool Lime Street in 1990, standing beneath the great arched roofs of one of Britain’s most dramatic city-centre termini. The photograph captures the distinctive late British Rail InterCity livery of dark grey, white and red, together with the sharply sloping cab front and full-length train stretching away under the trainshed. Across the platform the Liverpool Lime Street nameboard is clearly visible, while the vast iron-and-glass roof structure and overhead wiring emphasise the scale and engineering drama of the station. It is a strong image of long-distance rail travel at the start of the 1990s, when High Speed Trains still brought InterCity services deep into the heart of Liverpool.
