The Houses of Parliament, London, in 1971, seen from above with the full riverside sweep of the Palace of Westminster stretching along the Thames. The great Victoria Tower rises at the western end with the Union flag flying above, while the clock tower at the opposite end — now officially known as the Elizabeth Tower — anchors the familiar silhouette beside Westminster Bridge. Red buses and light traffic cross the bridge below, and behind the Gothic mass of the palace the pale slab of post-war office blocks and the hazy industrial skyline show how sharply old and new London still collided in the early 1970s. Rebuilt after the 1834 fire, the Palace of Westminster is one of the best-known Gothic Revival buildings in the world, with Victoria Tower designed as the royal entrance and archive tower.
