This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the ornate facade of the Horse & Groom public house at 22 Whitcomb Street in 1960. Situated on the corner of St Martin’s Street in Westminster, the pub was a fine example of late Victorian or Edwardian gin-palace architecture, featuring decorative cream tiling, large arched windows, and the prominent branding of the Courage and Barclay brewery. The image shows separate entrances for the “Saloon” and “Bar,” reflecting the social divisions of mid-century drinking establishments. A woman in a grey coat and a small child in a blue dress walk past the historic building, while a “Whitcomb Street” sign is visible on a corrugated metal structure in the foreground. This entire block was demolished in the 1970s to facilitate the construction of the new Swiss Centre and subsequent redevelopments near Leicester Square. This digital download is a poignant record of a vanished London landmark, perfect to print for yourself as a piece of atmospheric vintage wall art.
