This wonderfully busy 1971 street scene in Edinburgh captures a traditional horse-drawn beer dray still at work amid modern city traffic. Two dapple-grey horses pull a red Usher’s Brewery delivery cart loaded with beer barrels and crates, while the driver sits high on the front platform in bowler hat and dark coat. All around is a superb mix of period vehicles, including a Rover P6, a Volkswagen Beetle, a Mini, a Ford Anglia and a bright red Morris J4 van, showing old and new forms of transport sharing the same road at the start of the 1970s. Seen from above, the photograph has an almost documentary feel, preserving a moment when a centuries-old delivery method was still part of everyday urban life.
