A 1960s colour photo of the passenger terminal at Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport in 1967. The image features the terminal’s multi-storey facade with an open-air observation deck crowded with spectators overlooking the apron. Large gold lettering on the balcony reads “HONG KONG (KAI TAK) AIRPORT,” flanked by various international flags. Below the balcony, a large analogue clock is mounted on the grey wall next to the entrance area, which is partially obscured by a distinctive white and orange curved blast fence on the tarmac. In the background, the rugged peaks of the Kowloon mountains rise behind the airport’s administrative buildings and residential blocks.
Today, Kai Tak Airport is no longer in operation, having famously closed in 1998 to be replaced by Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok. The site of the former runway and terminal has since been redeveloped into the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, public parks, and high-rise residential complexes. While the terrifying low-altitude “checkerboard” approach over Kowloon City is now a thing of aviation history, the original terminal seen here has been demolished, completely transforming the skyline of the Kowloon Bay area into a modern urban hub.
