This beautifully detailed wooden deck belongs to the replica HMS Bounty, displayed at the World’s Fair as a floating attraction along the Marina in Flushing Bay. Built in Nova Scotia to authentic 18th-century plans, the ship was commissioned by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for the 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty, starring Marlon Brando. Rather than dismantling it after filming, MGM turned it into a travelling exhibit—capitalising on both the ship’s cinematic fame and the public’s fascination with maritime history.
Visitors to the fair could walk the deck, examine the rigging, inspect the cannons, and imagine life aboard a British naval vessel in the late 1700s. The craftsmanship was impressive enough that many forgot it was originally a movie prop rather than a working warship.
With its weathered timbers, coiled lines, towering masts and heavy guns, the Bounty offered a striking contrast to the futuristic pavillions, monorails and space-age designs elsewhere at the fair. It served as a reminder that innovation has a past as well as a future—and that adventure once meant months at sea, not spaceflight.
Like many fair attractions, the ship went on to have a life beyond 1965, eventually becoming one of the most recognised tall-ship film vessels of the era.
