This 1971 view on the Great North Road at Gosforth, Newcastle, shows a Hillman Hunter heading towards the camera with a red double-decker bus behind and a pale Ford Cortina in the next lane. On the right, the long hoardings of Gosforth Greyhound Stadium are covered with cigarette advertising, including a Players No.10 poster proclaiming “Guaranteed quality – plus coupons” and giving the price as 18p, alongside a Benson & Hedges advert. These tobacco adverts, together with the red road surface, broad carriageway and modern street lamps, give the scene a very strong early-1970s feel. Behind the hoardings stood Gosforth Greyhound Stadium, on a site later redeveloped as Asda, making this a good record of a Newcastle roadside landscape that has since changed completely.
