This 1987 photograph was taken in Oxford at the corner of Cornmarket Street, looking down the High Street, and captures a striking gathering of bikers against the stone frontages of the city centre. Parked outside Lloyds Bank is a row of custom machines including a bright red three-wheeler with wide rear tyres and a high-backed seat, alongside several chopper-style motorcycles with extended forks and high handlebars. The riders’ leathers, helmets and denim give the scene a strong late-1980s feel, while one bike to the right appears to have a dog riding pillion or in a rear carrier. The contrast between Oxford’s formal bank frontage and the improvised, individual look of the customised bikes makes this a particularly memorable street scene from the city centre in 1987.
