A bustling view along High Holborn in 1978, with several important buildings and former landmarks woven into the streetscape. On the right stands Proctor House, completed in 1963, marking the corner with Proctor Street.
Just beyond it, beneath the Philips sign, is 112 Holborn which once stood the celebrated headquarters and showroom of Bassett-Lowke, the world-famous model engineering firm known for its exquisitely crafted locomotives, ships and architectural models – Walt Disney visited several times. It later became the site of the original Beatties toy and model shop—before the chain expanded across the UK. (its now a McDonald’s).
Rising in the background is Holborn Tower, formerly known as New Oxford House, completed in 1960—one of the earlier postwar commercial towers to appear in this part of London.
