This 1986 view of Harrods captures the great Knightsbridge store stretching away along Brompton Road, its vast terracotta frontage lined with Union flags and punctuated by scaffolding around part of the entrance. The long run of arched ground-floor windows and awnings, the prominent Harrods sign, and the constant flow of shoppers beneath help fix the scene as one of London’s best-known retail landmarks in full everyday operation. The traffic adds plenty of useful period detail, including a black Ford Sierra in the foreground, a blue Morris Marina behind it, black cabs, a motorcycle and a stream of other mid-1980s cars passing the store. More than a simple building view, it captures Harrods as part of the ordinary rhythm of Brompton Road, busy, slightly grimy and very much embedded in the traffic and shopping life of 1980s London.
