A 1960s colour photo of the later incarnation of the famous Guinness Clock, photographed in Battersea Park during the late 1960s. The original animated Guinness clock was first installed here in 1951 as part of the Festival of Britain Pleasure Gardens, where it became one of the festival’s most popular attractions, performing mechanical displays and lighting sequences at regular intervals. When the Pleasure Gardens closed in 1952–53, the original structure was dismantled and removed.
Following its success, Guinness commissioned a series of touring and promotional versions of the clock, which appeared at exhibitions, seaside resorts and major public venues throughout the 1950s and 1960s. One of these later versions was re-erected in Battersea Park, explaining its presence here in 1968, well after the Festival of Britain had ended. By the late 1960s, changing attitudes towards large-scale advertising in public parks led to the final withdrawal of the Guinness clocks, and none remain in situ today.
