For over a century, the General Steam Navigation Company (GSNC) Wharf stood on the north bank of the River Thames, just east of Tower Bridge. Established in the early 19th century, the GSNC was once the largest coastal shipping company in Britain. Its riverside wharf near Lower Thames Street served as the company’s main London terminal, with steamers regularly mooring alongside its piers.
As part of the wider redevelopment of the area in the post-war years, the GSNC Wharf was demolished in the late 1960s/early 1970s. In its place rose the Tower Hotel.
