This 1984 view shows the Grosvenor Hotel stretching along Buckingham Palace Road beside Victoria, its imposing Victorian frontage running away beneath a line of distinctive mauve awnings. The building’s richly decorated stone and brickwork, balconies and repeated arched windows give it a grand late nineteenth-century character, while flower boxes, parked cars, pedestrians and the central road railings place it firmly in the everyday London streetscape of the mid-1980s. The scene is especially useful as a record of this stretch of Buckingham Palace Road before later changes in traffic management and surrounding development, when the Grosvenor still dominated the street as one of Victoria’s best-known hotels.
