LNER No. 3395 at Grosmont in 1973, seen standing in the yard at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway with other preserved stock and locomotives nearby. The engine is an old North Eastern Railway-design tank locomotive, carrying LNER lettering and number 3395, and the photograph captures the railway in its early preservation years when Grosmont still had a rough, work-in-progress appearance. The grassy bank, telegraph poles, simple yard track and rows of terraced houses beyond all add to the very distinctive atmosphere of the line in the 1970s. It is an especially evocative early preservation scene, showing how locomotives from Britain’s pre-grouping and LNER past were being gathered and restored at a time when the North Yorkshire Moors Railway was still establishing itself.
