A color photograph of the former Griffon Cutlery Works building at 151 West 19th Street in Manhattan, New York City, photographed in the 1980s. The mid-rise brick industrial building is dominated by large, weathered painted advertisements for Griffon Shears and related cutlery products.
The faded wall signage lists items including shears, scissors, nail files, tweezers, nippers, and manicure sets, and identifies the premises as the offices of the Griffon Cutlery Works. A rooftop water tank and exterior fire escape reinforce the building’s utilitarian, factory-era character.
These surviving ghost signs reflect New York City’s former manufacturing and wholesale trades, particularly those once concentrated in Chelsea and the west side of Manhattan, before the area’s later residential and commercial redevelopment.
