The Greenwich Shoppe on Greenwich Church Street, London, in 1972, seen across the road between Pratt’s and the Terminus Restaurant. Painted in bright yellow, the shopfront advertises itself as stationers, confectioners, tobacconists and newsagents, with its windows packed with magazines, greetings cards, sweets and everyday small goods. Details such as the T. Rex bunting across the window, the hanging packets and the dense display of stock give the scene a strong early-1970s feel, while passing saloons and a woman waiting at the kerb add to the ordinary street life outside. It is a vivid record of the kind of independent mixed shop that once formed an essential part of Greenwich’s local shopping streets.
