The Great Gear Trading Company on King’s Road, London, in 1971, with one of the most flamboyant shopfronts on the street: a hand-painted cloud-and-rainbow display crowned by a cartoon figure and surrounded by signboards pointing to places such as Portobello Road, Kensington Market and Carnaby Street. The neighbouring frontages of Thackeray’s and T. Carnihael can be seen to the left, while pedestrians in long coats and flared trousers stream past on the pavement and a dark saloon edges into the foreground. It is a vivid snapshot of Chelsea at the start of the 1970s, when King’s Road was still one of London’s most distinctive shopping streets, full of independent boutiques, eccentric displays and youth-culture style.
