Golden Lane Theatre, 1 Golden Lane, London, in 1976, with the canopied entrance of The Arts Educational Schools occupying the former Cripplegate Institute building and Brackley Street running away to the left. The richly detailed dark-brick façade belongs to the late Victorian institute, a building that had reopened as the Golden Lane Theatre only a few years earlier after the old Cripplegate Institute closed in 1973. In the distance, the post-war housing blocks and towers of the Golden Lane and Barbican area show how dramatically this part of the City had changed since the Blitz, while the old institutional frontage in the foreground survives as a reminder of the pre-war streetscape. The theatre itself closed around the late 1980s, and the building has since been converted to office use.
