The Cripplegate Institute opened on Golden Lane in 1896 and included a lecture theatre and performance hall. The street was almost completely destroyed by German bombing in 1940 during the London Blitz. In the 1950s the only remaining buildings in the immediate area were the Institute and the remains of the nearby St Giles church. In 1973, after the institute closed, this space was repurposed as the Golden Lane Theatre. Around 1988, the theatre closed for good and the building was converted into offices.
