Gazelle at the National Railway Museum in 1975, pictured outside the museum building beside a grounded wagon and semaphore signal. This tiny locomotive has one of the most unusual histories of any preserved British engine. The National Railway Museum has described it as thought to be the smallest standard gauge steam locomotive in the UK, built by Alfred Dodman & Co. of King’s Lynn in 1893 for the Norfolk businessman William Burkett. It later worked on the Shropshire & Montgomeryshire Railway and, during the Second World War, was bought by the War Department for ammunition work before eventually entering preservation. The bright blue paint, polished brass dome and compact enclosed cab make it look almost toy-like, which only adds to its appeal in a photograph that captures the early years of the York museum site.
