The tallest formations here belong to the Lyons Sandstone, deposited during the Permian period more than 250 million years ago.
By the early 1960s, Garden of the Gods was already a well-loved public park, drawing sightseers, hikers, and photographers who came to marvel at its unique landscape framed by Pikes Peak and the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The winding paths and open grassy areas visible in the photo reflect a more open, undeveloped era of park visitation—before expanded paved walkways, interpretive displays, and tourism infrastructure brought larger crowds.
