The Galloping Goose at Knott’s Berry Farm is one of those wonderfully quirky pieces of Western railroad history that feels almost too strange to be true. Originally built for the Rio Grande Southern Railroad in Colorado, these hybrid railcars—part automobile, part locomotive—were introduced in the 1930s as a cost-cutting solution when steam engines became too expensive to operate on lightly used mountain routes. They transported everything from schoolchildren to mail sacks and even livestock through the remote San Juan region, rattling along the tracks with a distinctive wobbling gait that earned them the nickname “geese.”
By the time this photograph was taken in the 1950s, the Galloping Goose era on the Rio Grande Southern had ended, but Knott’s Berry Farm—already deep into its transformation from a roadside chicken dinner restaurant into a theme park—saw a treasure worth saving. The Ghost Town & Calico Railroad officially debuted in 1952, making Knott’s one of the only theme parks in the world at the time with a genuine, full-size steam railroad. At Knott’s, the Goose became both a working attraction and a living artifact, giving visitors the unusual experience of riding a genuine relic from the twilight years of narrow-gauge railroading.
