This 1975 photograph shows a Ford Zephyr caught in a classic small-town traffic hold-up in St Ives, Cornwall, as a furniture lorry from Trevorrow & West of St Ives blocks the narrow street outside shops including Lanham’s and the local Lloyds Bank branch. The dark blue Zephyr, registration RET 387J, is left with nowhere obvious to go, while pedestrians and bystanders gather around the lorry as if a discussion is under way about how to untangle the situation. The double yellow lines, tight building line and crowded shopfronts make it clear just how little room there was in older town centres once large delivery vehicles and family saloons met head-on. More than just a street scene, the image captures the everyday congestion and minor drama of motoring in historic Cornish towns during the 1970s.
