In 1969, Britain’s most famous steam locomotive, Flying Scotsman, embarked on an ambitious and unprecedented journey across the Atlantic. The engine had been saved from scrapping a few years earlier by businessman Alan Pegler, who was determined to showcase British engineering to the world.
Pegler arranged a grand North American tour to promote British industry, with the Flying Scotsman travelling thousands of miles across the United States and Canada. Painted in its classic apple green livery, the locomotive hauled a specially built exhibition train and thrilled crowds wherever it went — from Boston to Dallas and even into Canada. For many Americans, it was their first time seeing a British steam engine in action.
However, despite the excitement, the venture proved financially disastrous. Mounting costs, logistical problems, and dwindling sponsorship left Pegler bankrupt, and the Flying Scotsman was stranded in the U.S. for several years. It was eventually rescued and returned to Britain in 1973 thanks to a public fundraising effort.
Today, the Flying Scotsman’s American adventure remains a remarkable chapter in its long and storied history — a bold symbol of British pride and determination that captured imaginations on both sides of the Atlantic.
