This 1979 view shows a roadside advertising hoarding for the Fiat Strada, using the bold slogan “Designed by computer. Silenced by laser. Built by robot.” beside a large side-profile image of the car. The advert is especially notable for its defacement, with the words “AND DRIVEN BY BURKES!” scrawled in black paint across the lower half, neatly puncturing the futuristic sales pitch with a very British bit of vandal humour. With its heavy black typography, bright orange hatchback and emphasis on high-tech manufacturing, the billboard captures the late-1970s fascination with automation and modern production methods, while the graffiti turns it into an even stronger period image. Rather than just recording a Fiat advert, the photograph preserves the clash between polished marketing and public reaction on the street, which often says just as much about the era as the original campaign itself.
