Experimental London Underground stock at Neasden Depot in 1987, photographed inside the vast covered shed with staff working between two trains. The green-fronted unit at right appears to be one of the 1986 Tube Stock prototype sets built in 1986–87, part of a three-train experimental programme used to test different traction equipment, construction methods and interiors before the later 1992 Tube Stock was ordered. The prototypes were famously turned out in different identifying colours, including red, blue and green, and were being displayed and tested at Neasden around this time. The silver-bodied train on the left, carrying a Neasden destination display and a Jubilee Shed roundel, provides an interesting contrast with the newer experimental design. This is a particularly valuable record of London Underground in a period of transition, when the future look of tube stock was still being worked out inside depots like this one.
