This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures the unique architectural landscape of London’s South Bank during the mid-fifties. The image features the Royal Festival Hall, a modernist landmark designed by Sir Robert Matthew and J.L. Martin for the 1951 Festival of Britain. Standing prominently alongside it is the historic Shot Tower, a brick structure built in 1826 for the manufacture of lead shot. While other industrial buildings in the area were cleared for the festival, the Shot Tower was retained and fitted with a steel-framed superstructure to serve as a radio beacon and “moon radar” transmitter. This juxtaposition of the sleek, new concert hall and the repurposed 19th-century industrial tower defines the post-war visual identity of the Thames riverside. The Shot Tower remained a fixture of the skyline until its demolition in 1962 to make way for the Queen Elizabeth Hall. This archival print is a significant record of “Lost London,” making it an ideal resource for historical research, architectural study, or to print for yourself as a unique piece of mid-century history.
