This authentic 1970s color photograph captures a classic moment in Detroit’s entertainment history at the legendary Olympia Stadium in 1970. The image features a young man and woman posing on the sidewalk in front of the stadium’s prominent marquee, which proudly announces “ELVIS PRESLEY TONIGHT 8:30 PM” for his performance on September 11, 1970. The marquee also promotes an upcoming preseason hockey game between the New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings, the stadium’s primary tenant. Several period automobiles are visible in the foreground, including a white Ford Mustang convertible and a blue AAA service truck. Known as “The Old Red Barn,” Olympia Stadium was a cornerstone of Detroit’s sports and music culture until its closure in 1980. This high-resolution scan beautifully preserves the intersection of pop culture and local landmarks during the early seventies. This digital download is an incredible piece of local history, perfect to print for yourself as vintage Michigan wall art.
