This elevated view captures Edgware Road in 1974 at a moment of transition, with 19th-century terraces still lining both sides of the street while new concrete towers begin to reshape the skyline. Dominating the left foreground is the recently completed Paddington Green Police Station (1971), its stark modernist bulk casting a long shadow over the older shopfronts below. Further along, the large white block on the corner is Lewis House, one of the early phases of the Church Street redevelopment scheme that swept away much of the pre-war housing in the area.
Beyond it, the entrance to Church Street Market can be seen, still flanked by the Victorian shops and traders’ units that had long defined this busy stretch of Marylebone. On the horizon stand the twin towers of the Penfold Street Estate, built in the late 1960s and already well-established landmarks by the mid-70s.
At street level, Edgware Road remains defiantly old London—narrow, slightly shabby, dense with small businesses—just before the later waves of regeneration and redevelopment would dramatically alter the area.
