This authentic 1960s color photograph provides a bird’s-eye view of downtown Detroit, Michigan, captured from the Top of the Flame restaurant on the 26th floor of One Woodward Avenue in 1964. The elevated perspective looks down onto the busy intersection of Woodward Avenue and Michigan Avenue, an area that would later be reimagined as Campus Martius Park. Dominating the background is the massive brown-brick J.L. Hudson’s department store, which reigned as the tallest department store in the world and served as the anchor of the city’s retail district. To the right of Hudson’s, the Kerns Building is visible, while prominent commercial signs for “SAMS” and “BOND” line the crowded streets below. The image captures the high-energy urban density of the era, filled with mid-century automobiles and pedestrian activity around the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. This high-resolution scan beautifully documents the architectural and commercial heart of Detroit during the mid-sixties.
