Dover Marine station in 1982, looking down across the great island platforms beneath the vast iron-and-glass trainshed. A blue and grey unit stands in the platform while the wide arched roof, platform signs for 4 and 5, clocks, brick buildings and footbridge all underline the station’s scale as one of Britain’s most impressive boat-train termini. Opened for public use after the First World War, the station was renamed Dover Western Docks in 1979 and remained in use until 1994, when the end of the traditional boat-train era and the coming of the Channel Tunnel brought closure. The building survives today as part of Dover’s cruise terminal, making views like this especially valuable as a record of the station in its last full decade as a working rail-sea interchange.
