Dover Marine station in 1982, with a blue and grey unit standing beneath the vast iron-and-glass trainshed at what was by then officially Dover Western Docks. The photograph is full of striking architectural detail, including the immense curving roof trusses, the bright red staircase, platform signs for 4 and 5, clocks, ticket sign and the bold white wayfinding boards suspended above the platforms. Opened as Dover Marine and renamed Dover Western Docks in 1979, this was one of Britain’s great rail-sea interchange stations, built to handle boat trains connecting with cross-Channel services. The station closed in 1994, but the remarkable trainshed survives today as part of Dover’s cruise terminal, making scenes like this a valuable record of its final years in railway use.
