This authentic 1960s color photograph, captured in 1964, documents the classic turn-of-the-century architecture of Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. The archival image prominently features the Main Street Cinema, with its ornate marquee advertising the Lon Chaney thriller Phantom of the Opera. Adjacent to the cinema is the Fine Tobacco shop, characterized by its green storefront, brown awning, and “Tobacco Shop” window lettering. A notable feature in the foreground is the life-sized wooden Indian figure, a traditional cigar store landmark that has stood in this exact location since the park opened. During this era, cigar shops followed a long tradition of using these figures as a visual trade sign to identify their business, much in the same way barbers used striped poles. While the Main Street Cinema is still standing and remains a staple attraction, the Tobacco Shop, which operated from 1955 until 1990, has now gone. Remarkably, the iconic Indian statue was kept and remains a permanent fixture on the sidewalk today. This factual record preserves the original commercial landscape and nostalgic detailing of Walt Disney’s first theme park.
