This 1984 view captures the imposing red-brick and stone frontage of Dillon’s University Bookshop at the corner of Gower Street and Torrington Place, one of the best-known academic bookshops in Bloomsbury at the time. The long ground-floor windows carry the Dillon’s University Bookshop name clearly across the frontage, with Fiction visible in one section, while the richly decorated upper storeys, gables and corner turret give the building a notably grand late-Victorian character. At street level the scene is full of useful period detail, including the brown Austin Ambassador crossing the junction, an orange Ford Escort van waiting at the lights, poster-covered kiosks, traffic signals and a steady flow of pedestrians. The broad view down Gower Street on the right adds to the documentary feel, showing this part of Bloomsbury before later changes to traffic, shopfronts and university surroundings altered the look of the area.
