1960s photo of Denman Street seen from its junction with Shaftesbury Avenue. On the right is the St James’s Tavern, a public house with a history on this site dating back to at least 1733, when it was known as The Catherine Wheel. In the background stands the former Regent Palace Hotel at 10 Glasshouse Street, identifiable by its tall, pale façade. Large billboards dominate the corner site, advertising Double Diamond beer and The Scotsman, the Scottish national newspaper.
The vacant plot on the corner was later filled by a bulky office block completed in the 1970s, occupied for many years by NatWest. That building, part of the so-called Monico Buildings, has itself since been demolished and redeveloped, making this view a snapshot of a streetscape that has now been erased twice over.
