This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures the spectacular Coronation decorations on The Mall in 1953. The image showcases the four massive tubular steel arches designed by Sir Hugh Casson and Eric Estorick, which spanned the ceremonial route between Admiralty Arch and Buckingham Palace. Each 65-foot arch is topped with a gilded lion and unicorn and features a suspended golden crown illuminated by ‘tiara’ lights at night. Pedestrians in mid-century attire are seen strolling along the wide avenue, with the grand architecture of Carlton House Terrace visible on the right. The minimalist, airy design of the arches was a hallmark of the “New Elizabethan” style, intended to provide a modern contrast to the historic stone buildings of St James’s.
