This authentic 1950s colour photograph offers a central view of one of the four monumental Coronation arches designed by Sir Hugh Casson for the 1953 celebrations. Constructed from tubular steel, the arch is topped with a gilded heraldic lion and unicorn and features a delicate golden crown suspended in the center, surrounded by wire-mounted spheres that were illuminated as “tiara” lights at night. The view through the arch looks toward the Victoria Memorial, with the lush greenery of the Buckingham Palace gardens visible in the background. Pedestrians in period attire and classic black saloon cars populate the wide, open expanse of The Mall. This archival print is a magnificent record of the mid-century modern aesthetic applied to British royal pageantry and is a perfect resource for historical research, editorial use, or as a nostalgic piece of wall art.
