Just a short walk from the bustle of Princes Street, Dean Path leads visitors into one of Edinburgh’s most tranquil and picturesque corners—Dean Village. Nestled along the banks of the Water of Leith, this historic area was once a milling hub, home to over ten water-powered flour mills that served the city for centuries.
Today, Dean Path is the perfect starting point for a scenic stroll through cobbled lanes, ivy-clad cottages, and riverside walkways. One of the village’s most striking landmarks is Well Court, a red sandstone building from the 1880s built to house mill workers. Its turreted clock tower and courtyard are among the most photographed spots in the city.
From Dean Path, visitors can join the Water of Leith Walkway, a peaceful walking and cycling route that winds its way toward the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art or all the way to Leith. Along the way, you’ll pass stone bridges, old mill buildings, and an abundance of wildlife.
