Cutty Sark, Greenwich 1972

A wonderfully atmospheric 1972 view of Greenwich, with the masts and rigging of the Cutty Sark rising dramatically above the surrounding streets. At this time the famous tea clipper—launched in 1869 and one of the fastest sailing ships ever built—had already been on public display for a decade, having been permanently berthed in a dry dock at Greenwich since 1954.

The scene captures the area in a transitional moment: construction hoardings surround the dock as restoration work continues, while everyday Greenwich life carries on around it. A group of young men stroll toward the river, a boy runs past with a dog, and a pair of 1970s cars sit parked outside modest shops and cafés. The “Cutty Sark Restaurant & Grill” with its Pepsi sign adds a note of local colour, typical of the unpolished charm the area retained before later redevelopment.

This photograph shows the Cutty Sark not as a polished tourist attraction, but as a towering maritime relic embedded in the fabric of a working neighbourhood—a reminder of London’s seafaring past still very much alive in early 1970s Greenwich.
