A 1970s colour photo of the ship’s wheel and aft deck of the Cutty Sark in Greenwich during the latter half of the 20th century. The scene from 1972 highlights the polished wooden wheel and the name “CUTTY SARK” inscribed on the side of the housing. Coiled heavy ropes lie on the weathered timber deck in the foreground, while the rigging extends upward against a clear blue sky. In the background, the soot-stained brick terraces and period architecture of Greenwich are visible beyond the ship’s white safety railings. Built in 1869 for the Jock Willis Shipping Line, the vessel was one of the last tea clippers to be constructed and among the fastest, representing the pinnacle of merchant sailing ship design before the dominance of steam. After decades of service and time spent as a training ship, it was moved to its permanent custom-built dry dock in Greenwich in 1954 to serve as a museum and memorial to the Merchant Navy.
