A wonderfully atmospheric view of Greenwich in 1972, with the magnificent Cutty Sark rising above the surrounding streets like a ghost of Britain’s maritime past. At this time the famous tea clipper—already a museum ship since 1957—was undergoing periods of repair and conservation, hence the hoardings and workmen visible around the dry dock.
The scene shows the everyday life of Greenwich continuing around this historic landmark: people strolling past small shops and cafés, striped awnings brightening the street, and a mix of cars and vans typical of the early 1970s. The domed roof of the entrance to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel peeks out on the left, reminding us how tightly woven the area’s river, transport and maritime history truly is.
